Artist Statement

From a young age I have found myself in constant wonder with the phenomena of our planet. At a young age I would wander into the forest close to my childhood home. I constantly would catch insects as well as aquatic creatures when visiting streams and lakes. My love of the natural world would lead me to study Earth Science at my first college. However, as time went on I realized that I wanted to use my artistic abilities to communicate to others about the need for us to collectively respect the natural world rather than study the natural world from within an academic research environment. And so I decided to devote myself more fully to the arts. I now utilize a variety of media including digital illustration, traditional illustration, printmaking, and sculpture. Many elements in my work are inspired by organic forms found in nature such as plant and animal cells as well as geologic phenomena. With my work I want to instill a sense of humility and awe towards the biosphere and inspire people to question the values that have led to its widespread exploitation and destruction. I believe that at a time when we are experiencing a global environmental crisis it is imperative that we find ways to reconnect ourselves to the environment which many of us have been separated from in our daily lives and in our current belief structures. My hope is that my work will contribute in part to the process of us reconnecting with the rest of the living world.
